Columbia College

Columbia College

15-story high-rise landmark building with brick and terra cotta cladding.

PROBLEM

Building compression, environmental conditions and steel corrosion led to the following building issues:

  • Displacement and shifting of the decorative cast-in-place concrete cornice
  • Deteriorated mortar joints
  • Water infiltration at window locations
  • Missing ornamental terra cotta units
  • Limestone spalling and cracking
  • Displacement of brick masonry at building corners

SOLUTION

BAMR erected hydro-mobile mast climbers on all elevations to complete the following repairs:

  • Replacement of the cornice with Glass-Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) panels, including a new steel structure support system
  • Replacement and repairs of the penthouse stucco
  • Window sealant replacement
  • Limestone replacement and patching
  • Grind and tuckpoint mortar joints on all elevations
  • Installation of new non-corrosive steel anchors
  • Replacement of damaged and missing terra cotta pieces
  • Brick replacement and rebuild at the building corners
